SB2023

“Words are windows to ideas”.

The 88-years’ young Rotary Club of Bangalore (RCB) has a rich heritage in “service to society”.  It has a successfully active Youth Service Wing devoted to building and providing life changing opportunities to our nation’s young.

The RCB Spelling Bee is one such flagship program.  The Bee aims to open the magical world of vocabulary to students in classes 4, 5 and 6.

In four prior editions, the best talent physically participated from and in Bangalore.  In 2020, the best participated in an online avatar of the competition.  In 2021, the best from Bangalore, Chennai, Kochi and Mangalore participated in an online format of the Bee.  They won laurels for themselves and their institutions.  The online program has become a nail-biting competitive treat to a very large audience.

As we go forward, we continue to collaborate with Rotary Clubs of Mangalore, Madras and Cochin.  This expanded RCB Bee footprint covers a lot more of South India and makes the Bee that much more interesting.

This year’s edition of RCB Spelling Bee will be held on Sunday, 29 January 2022 starting 8:30 am.

We encourage you to send up to nine students from your institution, three each from classes/standards/grades FOUR, FIVE AND SIX.  They get to participate in a prestigious event.  They get to learn from their peers and most important, they learn to go on stage and absorb new leadership skills.  Please encourage sister schools and other schools you may have access to, to participate as well.

The participation guidelines and the format of the Bee:

  • Every participant should have completed their registration process online before 25 January 2022.
  • If the registration is done incorrectly or is incomplete, you will not be allowed to participate.
  • The Bee will start at 8:30 am.  If you have an agenda later in the day, PLEASE DO NOT PARTICIPATE lest we get late.  We intend to finish the Bee by 2:00 pm.  However, if there is a delay, we request you to be patient.
  • The Bee will be conducted in two parts: a first qualifier, written, multiple-choice quiz, and a second finals akin to all such Bees in the world.
  • All spelling for the Bee will be British, UK spelling only.  No American spelling or spelling used elsewhere in the world that conflicts with the British/UK spelling will be treated as acceptable.
  • All participants will get to take part in the written version.  The top (approximately 5%) number of participants will make it to the finals.  We expect about 1,000 participants from the greater Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi and Mangalore regions.
  • ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST USE A COMPUTER.  NO PHONES OR PADS ARE ALLOWED TO BE USED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE QUIZ.
  • ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST BE IN A GOOD CONNECTIVITY AND ELECTRICITY ZONE.  IF THAT IS A CHALLENGE FOR YOU, WE REQUEST YOU NOT TO PARTICIPATE.  BECAUSE OF EITHER FAILURE, YOU WILL NOT GET A CHANCE TO COURSE-CORRECT AND YOUR PARTICIPATION WILL GO WASTE.
  • NO PARTICIPANT CAN HAVE ANYONE ELSE IN THE ROOM DURING THE ENTIRE BEE.
  • This year, we have gotten to a new level of security.
  • We will be scanning your room for other devices or people anywhere near you and you will automatically get disqualified if we see anyone OR any device other than the computer you are using near you.  We will be using the camera on your computer to do so.
  • Please do not ask the meaning of the word or the use of the word in a sentence – no questions shall be entertained in the qualifier round.
  • Judges will decide who the top candidates are from the qualifier round that will participate in the finals and their decision shall remain final and cannot be contested.
  • The FINALISTS shall be given numbers for sequence.
  • Each participant will be given a word.  This will continue until a word is spelt wrong and the participant is congratulated for participating.
  • The last three will then be selected as second and first runner ups and winner.
